Clase Azul Limited Edition x Eduardo Sarabia is the brand's contemporary-art collaboration release, developed with Mexican-American visual artist Eduardo Sarabia. Released under the title Encuentros, the bottle is a Joven blend (commonly cataloged as an Anejo expression by retailers) marrying unaged Clase Azul tequila with an Anejo aged in Russian oak casks and an Anejo aged in Amontillado sherry casks, crafted by Master Distiller Viridiana Tinoco. Bottled at 80 proof / 40% ABV with a 100% Highland Blue Weber agave mash. Production is limited to just 450 hand-numbered ceramic decanters, sold exclusively at Clase Azul boutiques.
Clase Azul Tequila is produced at Productos Finos de Agave (NOM 1416) in Jesus Maria, Los Altos de Jalisco - the Highland tequila region. Founded by Arturo Lomeli in 1997, Clase Azul is one of the most recognizable artisan tequila brands in the world, known as much for what's inside the bottle as for the bottle itself: each iconic hand-painted ceramic Clase Azul decanter is shaped, fired, and painted by hand by more than 100 artisans in the village of Santa Maria Canchesda, Mexico.
Eduardo Sarabia was born in Los Angeles to Mexican parents and has lived and worked in Guadalajara, Jalisco for more than 20 years. His decanter for Clase Azul draws on Northern Mexico folk imagery: the front of the bottle carries crossed pairs of picks and spades - a reference to a childhood story of his grandfather's search for hidden treasure - and a two-peso coin dated 1976, the artist's birth year. The back of the bottle carries allegorical portraits of a parrot, a rooster, and a she-goat - characters drawn from the Sinaloan folk and musical narratives of the artist's family. The decanter exists in two variations: a Dorado version accented with 24-karat gold, and a Color version that renders the animal motifs in vivid green and red with 24-karat gold detail.
On the nose, it shows rich cooked agave layered with vanilla, dried fruit, and warm oak. The palate brings smooth agave wrapped in caramel, sherry-cask sweetness, and an unusual Russian-oak spice character that no other Clase Azul release carries, and the finish runs long with complex oak-spice warmth.
