Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Fine Grain Oak is a Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This 2009 release was distilled from Buffalo Trace Rye Bourbon Mash Bill #2, entered the barrel at 125 proof on July 13, 1994, and matured for fourteen years and nine months in a charred white oak barrel built from fine-grained wood harvested from slow-growing trees, then bottled on May 7, 2009.
The Experimental Collection is Buffalo Trace's long-running program of one-off whiskeys exploring unique mash bills, woods, barrel toasts, and aging conditions, with more than 2,000 experimental barrels aging in the distillery's warehouses. The Fine Grain Oak release was paired with its Coarse Grain Oak companion to isolate one variable - oak grain density - against an identical mash bill, distillation date, and aging environment, with 300 bottles released of each.
On the nose, it shows rich sweetness with balanced complexity. The palate brings exceedingly sweet caramel and vanilla with an almost syrupy texture, and the finish carries a balanced, sustained sweet close.
The tighter grain of slow-grown oak produced a much sweeter, richer expression than its coarse-grain companion, with the denser wood pulling more sugar character. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
