Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection 1995 Vintage French Oak is a Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This 2010 release is the French oak half of a paired two-barrel oak-treatment experiment alongside the 1995 Vintage American Oak Chips bottling. Both barrels were filled April 7, 1995 on the 8th floor of Warehouse K with the same high-rye BT Mash #2 distillate, then matured 15 years before bottling.
The Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection launched in 2006 as the distillery's ongoing program of small-scale bourbon and whiskey experiments. Over 30,000 experimental barrels age in Buffalo Trace's warehouses, each crafted with unique variations in mash bill, wood type, barrel toasting, char level, and aging conditions. Selected experiments are bottled and released in limited quantities in 375ml "lab-style" bottles, each labeled with detailed production notes - a direct window into how master distillers Harlen Wheatley and the BT team push the boundaries of American whiskey-making.
The French Oak half of the pair used a new French oak barrel for the entire 15-year maturation, while the companion American Oak Chips bottling used a second-fill charred white oak barrel seasoned with toasted American oak chips. The side-by-side study isolates how oak species and treatment alone reshape bourbon over an extended aging window.
