Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Double Barreled 1993 Vintage is a Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This 2009 release was distilled from Buffalo Trace Rye Bourbon Mash Bill #2 on April 4, 1993, aged in new charred American white oak for six and three-quarter years, then dumped and re-barreled into fresh new charred American oak for an additional nine-plus years before being bottled on September 15, 2009.
The Experimental Collection is Buffalo Trace's long-running program of one-off whiskeys exploring unique mash bills, woods, barrel toasts, and aging conditions, with more than 2,000 experimental barrels aging in the distillery's warehouses. The Double Barreled experiment paired two re-barreled bourbons - a 1993 vintage and a 1997 vintage - to test how much additional new-oak time after a mid-life dump and re-fill changes the final bourbon, with each vintage entering its second barrel at a different point in its life.
On the nose, it shows deep oak character with rich vanilla and caramel. The palate brings a fully expressed oak profile, dark fruit, and dried spice, and the finish carries a long, wood-driven close with sustained richness.
The longer second-barrel time of the 1993 release produced a bourbon with a much deeper, more pronounced oak character than its 1997 companion. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
