Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Rediscovered 1989 Vintage is a Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This 2011 release is drawn from seven new-charred-oak barrels filled on November 17, 1989 and uncovered on the second floor of Warehouse I, then emptied in December 2010 after twenty-one years and one month of forgotten maturation, by which point 75.9% of the contents had evaporated.
The Experimental Collection is Buffalo Trace's long-running program of one-off whiskeys exploring unique mash bills, woods, barrel toasts, and aging conditions, with more than 2,000 experimental barrels aging in the distillery's warehouses. The 1989 Rediscovered Vintage was the oldest of three Rediscovered bottlings released together in February 2011 - companions to the 1991 and 1993 vintages - all surfaced during a routine audit of the Old Charter inventory Buffalo Trace acquired in 1998.
On the nose, it shows prominent oak with rich vanilla. The palate brings deep vanilla, caramel, and handmade-holiday-candy sweetness underneath assertive wood, and the finish carries a long oak-driven close balanced by lingering sweetness.
The 1989 was the deepest, woodiest of the three Rediscovered vintages, with twenty-one years of new-charred-oak contact pulling extreme wood character that the rich underlying sweetness still pushed through. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
