Tequila Ocho La Mula Extra Anejo is an Extra Anejo Tequila from Tequilera Los Alambiques in Arandas, Jalisco Highlands, Mexico. This 2021 single-field release was distilled from agave grown at Rancho La Mula - one of the Camarena family's original estate plots in Arandas - aged approximately three years in lightly-seasoned used American whiskey barrels and bottled at 80 proof, additive-free.

La Mula is part of Tequila Ocho's single-rancho program, with every Extra Anejo identifying both the year of production and the precise field where the agave was grown. The 2021 La Mula batch used agave that was six and a half years old at harvest, overripe with brown spots on the pina and sugar content above 30 percent - well past the typical industry harvest window. The lightly-seasoned barrel choice keeps oak influence restrained in service of the agave's natural complexity. Production follows Tequila Ocho's traditional methods at NOM 1474: brick-oven slow cooking, roller mill extraction, open-air fermentation, and double distillation in small copper pot stills.

On the nose, it shows warm agave layered with nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, chai tea spice, pine nut, praline, bitter chocolate, and cooked red apple. The palate brings ripe agave, dried fruit, toffee, custard, and cacao with deep nuance and balance, and the finish carries a long, layered close.

The combination of overripe single-field La Mula agave and the restrained barrel program gives this release one of the most agave-forward Extra Anejo profiles in the category. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
