Tequila Ocho Tropical Barrel Select Anejo is an Anejo Tequila from Tequilera Los Alambiques in Arandas, Jalisco Highlands, Mexico. This 2020 release rested twelve months exclusively in rum casks from Fiji, Trinidad, and Panama, bottled at 91.6 proof, additive-free.
Tropical was one of three releases in Tequila Ocho's 2020 Barrel Select Collection - a collaboration between Carlos Camarena, Tomas Estes, and Maison Ferrand master blender Alexandre Gabriel - and the rum-only build of the trio. The cask roster pulls from three distinct rum-producing regions, each contributing a different molasses profile to the final blend. Production follows Tequila Ocho's traditional methods at NOM 1474: 100 percent fully-mature Blue Weber agave from a single Los Altos field, brick-oven slow cooking, roller mill extraction, open-air fermentation, and double distillation in small copper pot stills.
On the nose, it shows cooked agave layered with tropical fruit, molasses sweetness, and gentle baking spice. The palate brings sweet agave, brown sugar, banana, vanilla, and a layered rum-driven warmth, and the finish carries a long, sweet, tropical close.
The rum-only build makes Tropical the sweetest and most fruit-forward of the 2020 Barrel Select trio. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
