WhistlePig The Boss Hog XI - The Juggernaut is a Straight Rye Whiskey from WhistlePig Farm Distillery in Shoreham, Vermont. This 2024 release - described by WhistlePig as their "oldest and boldest" Straight Rye - is aged in new American oak then finished in the world's first Thandai-seasoned barrels: casks seasoned with a marriage of aged rye and the spices of Thandai - saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, fennel, poppy, and black peppercorn. Bottled at cask strength (range 103.8-105.2 by barrel).
The Boss Hog is WhistlePig's annual experimental release - the distillery's outlet for its rarest, most extreme single-barrel rye each year. Every release follows what WhistlePig calls its promises (later expanded to its "X Commandments"): single barrel, bottled at proof, distinctly different from anything else in the lineup, fearlessly first, and irreverently inventive. Toppers are hand-cast in Danforth pewter, and each year's release has its own theme - sometimes tribute to a pig in the WhistlePig family, sometimes a historical figure, sometimes a region or tradition the team traveled to study.
The Juggernaut was developed after WhistlePig's experimental team traveled to Rajasthan, India, encountered Thandai during the Holi festival in Jaipur, then sourced ingredients at Delhi's Khari Baoli spice market - the largest spice market in Asia - to build the seasoning. Thandai is a traditional aromatic Indian drink built on nuts and spices; this release renders it as a finishing barrel for the first time in whiskey. The hand-made Vermont pewter pig topper is adorned in the style of the Indian elephant, the Rajah of Rye.
On the nose, it shows pungent smoldering incense layered with clove, nutmeg, spicy chai, lemon and orange peel, and saffron. The palate brings baking spices up front before opening into heavy-spice tea leaf, star anise, saffron buns, and abundant cardamom over over-ripe orchard fruit; rose, jasmine, and lilac arrive on the close. The finish carries long waves of baking spice giving way to soft tropical fruit.
