WhistlePig The Boss Hog IX - Siren's Song is a Straight Rye Whiskey from WhistlePig Farm Distillery in Shoreham, Vermont. This 2022 release is aged in new American oak, then double-finished one week each in casks that previously held Greek fig nectar and WhistlePig's own farm-scratch tentura - a Greek liqueur the team built in Vermont using cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, orange peel, and honey after sourcing ingredients from an original tentura distillery in Patras, Greece. Bottled at cask strength (range 102.5-106.2 by barrel), in a first for the series this release is bottled without a declared age.
The Boss Hog is WhistlePig's annual experimental release - the distillery's outlet for its rarest, most extreme single-barrel rye each year. Every release follows what WhistlePig calls its promises (later expanded to its "X Commandments"): single barrel, bottled at proof, distinctly different from anything else in the lineup, fearlessly first, and irreverently inventive. Toppers are hand-cast in Danforth pewter, and each year's release has its own theme - sometimes tribute to a pig in the WhistlePig family, sometimes a historical figure, sometimes a region or tradition the team traveled to study.
Siren's Song was developed by the women of WhistlePig and is inspired by the nine Muses of Greek mythology - daughters of memory whose songs inspired Greek arts and sciences. The release uses nine different bespoke pewter toppers from Vermont's Danforth Pewter, one for each muse, distributed at random across bottles nationwide. Melpomene, the muse of tragedy, is the rarest topper. The release also won Best Rye Whiskey honors in major competition.
On the nose, it shows immersive sweet fig with ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg layered behind. The palate brings cinnamon, clove, raisin, plum, and cherry over a base of mature rye, with a Swedish-glogg-like density filtered through quality rye character. The finish carries a long close of peppery rye, light wood, lingering fig, maple, and an amaretto touch.
