WhistlePig The Boss Hog VII - Magellan's Atlantic is a Straight Rye Whiskey from WhistlePig Farm Distillery in Shoreham, Vermont. This 2020 release is sourced Canadian rye (Alberta Distillers) aged 17 years in American oak then finished in new Spanish oak (Cantabria mountain forests) for three weeks and South American teakwood (Brazil) for three days, bottled at cask strength (range 105.1-107.8 by barrel), with a 100% rye mash bill.

The Boss Hog is WhistlePig's annual experimental release - the distillery's outlet for its rarest, most extreme single-barrel rye each year. Every release follows what WhistlePig calls its promises (later expanded to its "X Commandments"): single barrel, bottled at proof, distinctly different from anything else in the lineup, fearlessly first, and irreverently inventive. Toppers are hand-cast in Danforth pewter, and each year's release has its own theme - sometimes tribute to a pig in the WhistlePig family, sometimes a historical figure, sometimes a region or tradition the team traveled to study.

Magellan's Atlantic was inspired by the first recorded circumnavigation of the globe - the 1519-1522 Magellan-Elcano expedition that crossed the Atlantic and Pacific. The cask journey mirrors the voyage: northern Spain's high-tannin Cantabria oak gives the rye its first wood crossing, and the Brazilian teakwood completes the run. The release was the first Boss Hog to receive a 93-point score and one of two paired releases (with Boss Hog VIII LapuLapu's Pacific) telling the two halves of the expedition's story.

On the nose, it shows intensely aromatic cinnamon sugar, allspice, and maple. The palate brings toasted wood, creamy vanilla, roasted almond, ground espresso, and deep spice from the dual exotic-wood finish, and the finish carries a long, integrated close.
