WhistlePig The Boss Hog V - The Spirit of Mauve is a Straight Rye Whiskey from WhistlePig Farm Distillery in Shoreham, Vermont. This 2018 release is MGP Indiana-distilled rye aged 13 years, finished in French Calvados (apple brandy) casks and bottled at cask strength (varies roughly 57-60% ABV by barrel), with a 95% rye / 5% malted barley mash bill.
The Boss Hog is WhistlePig's annual experimental release - the distillery's outlet for its rarest, most extreme single-barrel rye each year. Every release follows what WhistlePig calls its promises (later expanded to its "X Commandments"): single barrel, bottled at proof, distinctly different from anything else in the lineup, fearlessly first, and irreverently inventive. Toppers are hand-cast in Danforth pewter, and each year's release has its own theme - sometimes tribute to a pig in the WhistlePig family, sometimes a historical figure, sometimes a region or tradition the team traveled to study.
The Spirit of Mauve honors Mauve, WhistlePig's celebrity pet pig, and her well-documented love of apples - the inspiration behind the Calvados cask choice. Each bottle is crowned by a handcrafted Danforth pewter topper cast in Mauve's image and packaged in a casket-inspired gift box, marking the second Boss Hog tribute to a member of the WhistlePig pig family after Mortimer.
On the nose, it shows mulled cider, cardamom, candied ginger, and a touch of pipe tobacco; with time, caramel, vanilla, and gentle rye spice develop. The palate brings maple syrup and pear balanced by dark chocolate and French oak spice, and the finish carries a long, spice-driven close with charred oak, caramel, and lingering maple.
