WhistlePig The Boss Hog IV - The Black Prince is a Straight Rye Whiskey from WhistlePig Farm Distillery in Shoreham, Vermont. This 2017 release is MGP Indiana-distilled rye aged 14 years in new American oak, then finished in rare French Armagnac casks and bottled at cask strength (varies approximately 115-124 by barrel), with a 95% rye / 5% malted barley mash bill. The Black Prince was the first Boss Hog to be distilled at MGP Indiana, marking WhistlePig's shift away from its prior Canadian (Alberta Distillers) source for this release.
The Boss Hog is WhistlePig's annual experimental release - the distillery's outlet for its rarest, most extreme single-barrel rye each year. Every release follows what WhistlePig calls its promises (later expanded to its "X Commandments"): single barrel, bottled at proof, distinctly different from anything else in the lineup, fearlessly first, and irreverently inventive. Toppers are hand-cast in Danforth pewter, and each year's release has its own theme - sometimes tribute to a pig in the WhistlePig family, sometimes a historical figure, sometimes a region or tradition the team traveled to study.
The Black Prince was the first rye whiskey ever finished in Armagnac casks. The name honors Prince Edward of Woodstock - the 14th-century English heir who campaigned through southwest France and developed a taste for Armagnac. After release, the bottling went on to win Best in Show at the blind tasting at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
On the nose, it shows bold rye spice layered with apricot, clove, and cinnamon. The palate brings toasted marshmallow, burnt sugar, dried plum, and the brandy-driven depth of the Armagnac casks, and the finish carries a long close of dark chocolate and warming clove.
