WhistlePig The Boss Hog I is a Straight Rye Whiskey from WhistlePig Farm Distillery in Shoreham, Vermont. This 2013 inaugural release is sourced from Alberta Distillers in Canada, aged 12 years in new American oak under Canadian climate conditions, then single-barrel selected at WhistlePig Farm and bottled at cask strength (varies 134-136 by barrel), with a 100% rye mash bill.

The Boss Hog is WhistlePig's annual experimental release - the distillery's outlet for its rarest, most extreme single-barrel rye each year. Every release follows what WhistlePig calls its promises (later expanded to its "X Commandments"): single barrel, bottled at proof, distinctly different from anything else in the lineup, fearlessly first, and irreverently inventive. Toppers are hand-cast in Danforth pewter, and each year's release has its own theme - sometimes tribute to a pig in the WhistlePig family, sometimes a historical figure, sometimes a region or tradition the team traveled to study.

Edition I was the first - drawn from 24 of WhistlePig's oldest and most unique barrels and built to set the program's tone: single barrel, barrel proof, unblended, non-chill filtered, no secondary cask finishing. There are three label variants from the 2013 release in circulation. This one carries the plain "Boss Hog" label next to the Series mark.

On the nose, it shows powerful mint, cinnamon toast, and citrus zest. The palate brings heavy rye spice with butterscotch, rich caramel, and vanilla, and the finish carries a long, warming close of dark chocolate, red pepper heat, and charred wood.
