WhistlePig The Boss Hog X - The Commandments is a Straight Rye Whiskey from WhistlePig Farm Distillery in Shoreham, Vermont. This 2023 release is aged 13 years in new American oak, then double-finished: first in casks seasoned with WhistlePig's own experimental spirit - distilled from rye and whey and infused with aromatic resins from Boswellia and Commiphora trees (Frankincense and Myrrh) - and finally in craft mead casks. Bottled at cask strength (range 105.3-107 by barrel).
The Boss Hog is WhistlePig's annual experimental release - the distillery's outlet for its rarest, most extreme single-barrel rye each year. Every release follows what WhistlePig calls its promises (later expanded to its "X Commandments"): single barrel, bottled at proof, distinctly different from anything else in the lineup, fearlessly first, and irreverently inventive. Toppers are hand-cast in Danforth pewter, and each year's release has its own theme - sometimes tribute to a pig in the WhistlePig family, sometimes a historical figure, sometimes a region or tradition the team traveled to study.
The Commandments marks the tenth Boss Hog and the formal expansion of the program's original five promises into ten - now emblazoned within the gift box and applied to all future releases: I. The theme is biblical - the rye whey-spirit supplies milk and honey, the resins supply Frankincense and Myrrh, the mead supplies the honey side again, and the wooden gift box opens through a revolving door. The bottle is crowned by a handmade pewter topper of the lawmaker and rule-breaker of rye.
On the nose, it shows iconic rye spice, allspice, clove, and pepper layered with a savory edge and undertones of honey developing into apple cider. The palate brings bold honey from the mead, with patient air revealing blackberry, rosemary, bittersweet chocolate, and smoky incense. The finish carries a long, immersive close with a Middle Eastern spice-bazaar character.
