A. Smith Bowman Cask Strength is an American Whiskey from A. Smith Bowman Distillery in Fredericksburg, Virginia - the annual flagship cask-strength bourbon release from Virginia's oldest distillery. Each batch is bottled uncut and non chill-filtered, aged a minimum of nine to ten years, and hand-selected from the best barrels in the distillery's warehouses. There are no finishes or secondary maturation in this series - the focus is on barrel selection and blending.
A. Smith Bowman operates as a sister distillery to Buffalo Trace under Sazerac. The distillate is initially produced at another Sazerac distillery, shipped to Virginia, and re-distilled at A. Smith Bowman before extended aging in the distillery's warehouses. Master Distiller Brian Prewitt has noted that Virginia's hot, humid summers and mild winters drive proof upward as barrels age, with water loss outpacing alcohol loss in the angel's share - one reason this series consistently lands at elevated barrel proofs ranging from 135.1 to 144.5 across the first five batches.

Batch 1 (2021) - 141.1 Proof, 10 Year. Master Distiller Brian Prewitt's inaugural release - barrels selected from the lower tiers of Warehouses A and A1. Nose of vanilla, apple, dried cherries, candied nuts; long oily finish. Gold at the 2021 North American Bourbon & Whiskey Competition.
Batch 2 (2022) - 144.5 Proof, 10 Year. "Hazmat" proof, the highest of the series to date. Contains the last barrels laid down by former Master Distiller Joe Dangler (30+ years at A. Smith Bowman). Cherry and toast on the nose; apple, cherry, vanilla, roasted nuts on the palate.
Batch 3 (2023) - 135.1 Proof, 9 Year. First batch hand-selected solo by Distiller David Bock. Nine-year-old barrels chosen for complexity and sweetness. Candy apples and maple on the nose; sweet raisins, vanilla, and toasted toffee on the palate.
Batch 4 (2025) - 139.7 Proof, 10 Year. Best Bourbon and Best American Whiskey at the 2025 International Whisky Competition in Louisville. Leather, plums, and apple on the nose; raspberry chocolate, stone fruit, cinnamon on the palate; crisp apple finish.
Batch 5 (2026) - 137.6 Proof, 10 Year. Distillate first produced at another Sazerac distillery, then twice re-distilled at A. Smith Bowman before extended aging. Candied apples and a hint of smoke on the nose; ripe plums, cherries, and sweet florals on the palate; warm, lingering finish.
The Cask Strength series has earned national recognition: Batch 1 took Gold at the 2021 North American Bourbon & Whiskey Competition, and Batch 4 swept Best Bourbon and Best American Whiskey at the 2025 International Whisky Competition. Each release drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
